FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany News Articles. Trinidad and Tobago and Dwight Yorke Profile.

All Dwight on the Night

Following Trinidad and Tobago's sensational FIFA World Cup 2006 Qualification, we profile their star-striker, legend and captain Dwight Yorke and discuss the Caribbean nations chances in the forthcoming tournament.

When Dwight Yorke jetted down under to join Australian side Sydney United, the Trinidad and Tobago star must have thought he had seen the last of the limelight in his football career, but after a superb start in his new career came the fulfillment his last remaining ambition as a footballer - FIFA World Cup Qualification with his home nation.

Dwigth YorkeThe tiny Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago, with an estimated population of just over a million threw the party of a lifetime as the country qualified for the FIFA World Cup Finals for the first ever time with a nail biting victory over Bahrain.

Once in exile after a club versus country row while at Manchester United, Yorke led the celebrations as both he and his country realized their dream. The tournament has also thrown up extra impetus not just for Yorke, but for several of his team-mates who ply their trade in the lower leagues of the English soccer divisions. In their second Group B fixture, the side will face none other than England themselves.

Picked up in 1991 by Aston Villa boss Graham Taylor as a youngster, Yorke over time became a huge hit for the West Midlands club and when the Old Trafford door came knocking in the summer of 1998, Yorke couldn't resist the move and headed North to Manchester United in a then record 12.6 million (GBP) move.

Not even he could have imagined the impact he would have made - an instant bond with United striker Andrew Cole occurred as Yorke himself smashed 29 goals in his first season which saw Manchester Untied achieve The Treble - League Title, FA Cup and European Cup (UEFA Champions league as its known nowadays). This feat has never been matched and possibly never will be. His exploits earned him the Carling Player of the Year award 1999.

After this Yorke's personal life started to overshadow the playing side and both he and Manchester Untied struggled to match the early success. After the arrival of Ruud van Nistelrooy and departure of Andy Cole, Yorke also found himself having to move on and joined Blackburn Rovers and subsequently Birmingham City but both moves failed to provide much joy.

When the opportunity to play in Australia at the start of the 2005/06 campaign came up, Yorke took it with both hands and has rejuvenated his career and his life. He will be eager to take the chance to show he can still match it with the best in Germany.

It is a tough group though for the Caribbean team and they will have to use all their gut and determination to progress from a hard group. Their three opponents all have World Cup experience and will prove difficult for the inexperienced Tobagan's making their bow. They will look to captain Yorke's experience and solid hard work on the pitch to help cause an upset but realistically the country will be more than happy to just produce good performances with anything extra being a bonus.

However Trinidad and Yorke fare in the tournament though, there will be guaranteed to be entertainment and of course, that famous beaming smile.
