1666 saw the birth of what today represents a unique collection of the European garden arts, a place where its most significant stylistic developments have been handed down in their original forms to the present day: the Baroque garden in the French style, the English landscape garden, and the botanical garden.
From the 17th to the mid-19th century, 135 hectares were laid out at the command of the Hanoverian Electors and Kings to create the Grosser Garten, Georgengarten, Berggarten, and Welfengarten - the four Herrenhausen Gardens.
