Brazil emerged as eventuial champions taking their number of World Cup successes to a record five. Ronaldo buried his ghosts of France 98 as he claimed both goals (and ultimately the Golden Boot) in the final to defeat a stubborn and somewhat surprising German side. Like the previous 16 FIFA World Cup Finals, the 2002 competition provided many surprises. Unfancied America's run to the last-eight and France's first round elimination raised many eyebrows but arguably the biggest shock was the performance of co-hosts South Korea. who under the guidance of Dutchman Guus Hiddink, embarked upon a sensational journey to the semi-finals beating the likes of Italy on the way. Their feat was all the more impressive considering up until the finals they had never won a single game in the tournament. Many of the squad's performances earned them moves abroad and the likes of Sun Ji Park (Manchester United) and Seol Ki-Hyun (Anderlecht) ahve both flourished in Europe since. Below you will find general statistics and facts from the 2002 FIFA World Cup. A comprehensive match analysis will be available soon. WORLD CUP 2002 STATISTICS
